Nearly forty students from Weston College visited Barley Wood this term as part of a new collaboration designed to develop the next generation of early years professionals and strengthen the local childcare workforce.

The students, who are working towards Level 1 and Level 3 Early Years qualifications, took part in a full day of hands-on learning centred on the benefits of outdoor provision for young children.

Set within the expansive natural grounds of Barley Wood Estate, the visit gave students direct experience of how an outstanding outdoor environment supports children’s exploration, creativity and wellbeing. Activities were designed to build confidence in working with children outside the classroom and to give learners a genuine insight into best practice within an early years setting

Students explored the full breadth of the site, including a visit to the much-loved Old Potting Shed Nursery too; a highlight that provided insight into another setting within this Group.

Those taking part described themselves as genuinely impressed by the scale and natural beauty of the grounds and the variety of outdoor learning opportunities available to the children who attend every day.

Natalie Purkiss, Head of Early Years at the YMCA Dulverton Group said “Barley Wood offers something truly special; a learning environment where children can grow, discover and thrive through their connection with nature. We were delighted to open our doors to Weston College students and to show them what an fantastic early years practice looks like in action. Developing local talent is central to everything we do, and we look forward to building on this partnership in the months ahead.”

The visit forms part of a wider staffing strategy to grow and retain skilled practitioners within the local area with future events planned.
