The Somerset Young Carers Project is a dedicated service in Somerset that supports Young Carers under the age of 18 and aims to help them reach their full potential in many ways including regular respite groups and activity days.

YMCA Dulverton Group became involved with the group earlier this year, with two regular groups meeting fortnightly.

The group took part in a number of exciting activities offered at GWC including, bell boating and segways! They also each crafted their own dream catchers to take home.

Alli Waller, Lead Youth Worker said, “the day was designed to give the young carers respite and a chance to take part in activities they wouldn’t normally get a chance to do, due to their responsibilities at home.”

The day ended with a visit from the North Somerset Birds of Prey Centre, who brought along three owls and a hawk! The team provided an insightful talk about the birds of prey and the challenges they face in the wild, the group loved it!

1 in 12 young people in the UK are acting as carers. In just four years, an extra 10,000 young carers have sought support from groups just like this one. This service is invaluable, and can truly transform young people lives.
