At the latest Beach Hotel Minehead community meal, we welcomed young people from YMCA housing. This was a chance for Beach Hotel chefs to share with young residents the experience of working in a professional hotel kitchen.

This was the first time in a professional kitchen for many of the young people attending, and with the guidance of the Beach Hotel chefs, they got to take part in the first cookery school experience. The group put their cooking skills to the test and produced a wonderful three course meal, which consisted of:

  • Cheese topped sourdough
  • Bolognese Macaroni
  • Homemade scones and cream

It was great to see that as a team, with some guidance from the chefs, all of the young people prepared and cooked some amazing food. Not only did the group produce some delicious meals, but they came away with new friendships, some exciting skills and a great insight into the world of a professional kitchen.

It opened the eyes of the young residents and they got to see how the combination of hard work and a strong team bond can create great things. Head Chef Angus shared that he felt: “It was the first time many of them have been part of a team and we wanted to show them what they could achieve. The young people did a super job and were pleased with what they created, bravo!”

The Beach Hotel host regular community meals and always like to welcome in more new faces. The team described the concept as: “producing for the community by the community”. The scheme is good fun to be involved in, attendees will be able to create a wonderful heart-warming meal with complimentary tea, coffee and squash.

At YMCA Dulverton group, we love to see our young people try new things, exceed their own expectations and learn about other brilliant industries, whilst giving back to their own communities.
